Chao Kingkuok

Once upon a time, an angel was ordered by the God to be born as a toad in the material world in order to test human beings.

There were an old man and an old woman. They were spouses. The couple earned their living by fishing. They netted with netting baskets. One day, while they were fishing in a pond, they netted a toad, who asked the couple to let him live with them. The couple obliged.

When they had arrived home, they told people that a toad could speak and sing beautifully. After hearing the news, many people with cigarettes and betel nuts flocked to see the abnormal toad. After realizing that all the people bid farewell to the couple and the toad. The toad decided to go to the field with the old couple and others (by boat).

Upon arrival to the field, everybody had to work in their own separate place. The toad turned itself into a human being and found a fertile area. He cleared the area of forest and planted the seeds given to him by the God.

Later, his plants bore fruits plentifully. In the meantime, a herd of white monkeys came to eat and destroy almost all of the crops. The toad turned man got irate. He rushed to grab hold of the tail of the biggest monkey and threatened to take its life. The creature was terrified. It pleaded with him to spare its life, promising him a magic towel in return. The monkey told him that he could achieve what he wanted with the powers of the magic towel (the monkey left).

Then the toad collected the rest of the crops and brought it home for the old couple. On his way back home, he met one of the king's daughters, who was visiting the forest. He fell in love with her.

When the toad got home from the field, he asked the old couple to demand her hand in marriage. The old woman agreed and went to meet the king. The King agreed to give his daughter to the toad but he set a condition that a gold bridge had to be built from the old couple's home to his Palace, otherwise, he would execute all of the members of the couple's family. The old woman was very worried. When she came back home, she discussed with her husband ways to flee home. But the toad restrained them and assured them he would build a gold bridge within three days.

The following morning, the toad built a gold bridge and castle with the power from the magic towel.

After that, the old couple, the toad, and other guests went in procession to the Palace to meet the King. The King got very worried because he had not asked any of his daughters for their consent. Fortunately, his younger daughter agreed to get married to the toad. Unfortunately before their marriage, enemies invaded the country. The King used all his military forces and his children to fight against the enemies, but he could not conquer them. Only the toad could defeat them.

When he returned home, he turned himself into a young handsome man. He tried wooing his prospective wife. Seeing that she got very angry, he turned himself into a toad to show her the truth. After realizing that the man was her real prospective husband, she came with him to meet the king. They were married and reigned together.
